Wedding Dresses - A Savvy Bride's Guide To A Great Wedding Gown

Trying on wedding dresses is a time consuming and arduous process. You will try on anywhere from 16-18 dresses before you find the one that is right for you. Start the dress hunting process at least 9 months before the wedding to ensure sufficient time, especially if you're planning on having the dress costume made. The wedding dress is the stuff of dreams. It is the only dress that will likely make you or someone you know cry. For such an important purchase you need to be armed with the best information available. To help you find the very best look for the day, follow these Do's and Dont's list to finding the perfect wedding dress for you.

Do give yourself time.
A lot of experts recommend you start shopping for your dress, as soon as you have your wedding date set, at latest, six months before the wedding. This will give you sufficient time to go on a few shopping expeditions, order your dress and have it made, then have it fitted. However, some designers will require even more time than that.

Don't appear without having made an appointment.
If you want to have one on one time with the salon consultant, you'll need to make an appointment, a lot of salons require this so that they can provide you with their undivided attention.

Do bring magazine clippings with you.
Consultants enjoy seeing images of what you like and what you don't. So bring a bridal magazine with you, this will help them form a picture of what it is you're looking for and they'll be able to pin point styles that might be of interest to you. It is also helpful if you provide information to them about your sense of style - both the details of your wedding and your general fashion sense. (If you adore jeans and T-shirts, you'll probably opt for a different dress than a woman who has multiple beaded dresses in her closet.)

Don't be afraid to try on a dress that doesn't shout "pick me", especially if the consultant suggests it.
You, might not have envisioned yourself wearing a slinky mermaid silhouette, but your consultant may have found one that would look stunning on you. Try it on, what have you to loose? By being flexible, you'll have more and better opportunities available to you.

Do inform your consultant about how much you're willing to spend on your dress.
A savvy bride needs to know how to make ends meet without blowing her budget. Be open and honest from the start, and stick to it. This way, your consultant will only bring you dresses in your specified price range.

Don't bring a huge entourage with you.
While it's a great idea to bring mom and invite a couple of your closest friend's, to help you sort through the dozens of wedding dresses you'll see, it can be overwhelming and discouraging to have 12 different opinions of what you should be wearing on your wedding day! Less is definitely more in this situation. Once you've made your selection on the perfect gown, you can then invite other VIPS to let them ooh and ahh over your gown.

Do dress appropriately for the fitting.
If you really want to get a general idea if the dress is really right for you, make sure that your makeup and hair really looks good on the day you go shopping for your dress. If you plan to have an up-do for the big day, then at least wear your hair in ponytail. When you go to the salon, make sure to bring a pair of heels that are about the same height as the shoes you'll be wearing with your wedding gown, as well as, a strapless or long line bra. Trying on the dresses this way, will help you better judge which dress will work on you best. It's a great solution to help you mistake-proof your selection as much as possible.

Don't consider alterations.
I was given a great advice by a wedding planner that I will now pass on to you. Never, ever consider altering a dress to fit your body. Either the dress fits well on you as is, or you'll have to browse through more wedding dresses in order to find the right one for you. If the dress is altered, it can end-up looking completely different than what it was and you might not like it now. Find a dress that fits perfectly to your body, should you need to have the hem of the dress altered in order to shorten it, that's fine, but leave the body of the dress alone. Beautiful wedding dresses can be ruined with alterations no matter how skilled the seamstress is, avoid this.

Buying a wedding dress is exciting! You're planning your grand entrance to a new future and milestone in your life. Take your time, try on as many wedding dresses as you can and only select the gown that makes you feel beautiful and that looks wonderful on you. I know that you will be a beautiful bride on your wedding day!
